Part II Why Change is Necessary

YOU need to be informed so that you can weigh in on the process of change now beginning to unfold. After all, it’s YOUR health!

There are three general problem areas with current health care:

  1. Population health
  2. Experience of care by individual patients/consumers
  3. Per person cost of care

Specifically, the problems in our health care systems can be further broken down into six parts:

  1. low population health quality
  2. high cost of care
  3. low quality of care received by individuals
  4. cottage industry of providers
  5. unaligned incentives, i.e. providers paid for volume of services, not quality of care
  6. low level of practice that is evidence-based


Environmental factors: all this is happening in an environment where:

In other words, WE HAVE REACHED THE TIPPING POINT FOR CHANGE

So, look for change in these areas:

Currently many providers are unaware of specifics of national quality metrics, or even that they exist!
Quality metrics will soon become public information!
Quality metrics will be linked to providers payments, i.e. reimbursements for services

Who Sets Quality Metrics??

Monitoring of YOUR health STATUS is KEY. Who does it?

BOTTOM LINE: PAYMENT OF PROVIDERS WILL BE TIED TO QUALITY AND COST METRICS.
